#43: Brion Gysin – Pistol Poem

With the Dreamachine, Brion Gysin invented the first art object that had to be experienced with closed eyes. Patterns passing rapidly across a light bulb create a flickering effect, which induces a state of light relaxation. Gysin also worked on methods at the sonic level that were intended to alter the state of consciousness. He is the inventor of the cut-up technique and tried cutting up not only texts but also sounds. In 1960, he created the piece Pistol Poem on behalf of the BBC. For this, Gysin recorded gunshots from different distances and reassembled them on tape.
