#125: Can – Ethnological Forgery Series #27

Much of the music of Cologne-based Krautrock pioneers Can is rooted in long, collective improvisations in the studio. Between 1968 and 1974, the band repeatedly ventured into the territory of other cultures. Can imitated this music in their own way and collected such excursions in the Ethnological Forgery Series. Episode 27 from 1970 is reminiscent of the musical style gagaku, which has been played at the imperial court in Japan since the 7th century.

No Wave Time Warp

When no wave emerged in New York City in the late 1970s, noise musician, art critic and artist Joseph Nechvatal was already there. Based on the music of that time, he and Paul Paulun discuss aspects of the movement, which used radical, often multimedia works to oppose the commodification of music and art.
