In the early 1980s, a sampler cost as much as a mid-sized car and could record just six seconds of sound. Hamburg musician Holger Hiller rented such a device on a daily basis in order to use the instrument’s capabilities to leave common pop clichés behind. Hiller also experimented with lyrics. Without being familiar with Dadaism, he ventured into its territory. The results of his studies lie at the intersection of art and music and showed the avantgarde a new direction – such as the piece Hosen, die nicht aneinander passen (Trousers that don’t match), released in 1983.
