#153: Laurie Spiegel – A Strand of Life

For American composer Laurie Spiegel, music is a way of expressing the conscious experience of existence. When she was confined to bed with a viral infection in 1990, she decided to translate her illness into sound. In a science magazine, Spiegel found the composition of a viroid, which is almost 100 times smaller than a virus. She replaced the four nucleic bases that make it up with the notes A, E, G and C. Afterwards, Spiegel was amazed that a creature whose RNA strand can be represented by a short piece of music could be so close to the boundary of life.
