Category: DJ-Sets

DJ-sets typically take place in bars, last many hours, and are made with amusement in mind. Nothing is planned, but everything might happen, since the complete archive is at hand on the iPad.

Tellus – New York City’s Art Scene on Tape (1983-93)

When sound became portable with the Walkman in the early eighties, the subscription-only Tellus Audio Cassette Magazine begins to feature New York City’s expansive Downtown art scene on tape. 41-minute mix with Gretchen Bender, Jonathan Borofsky, Live Skull, Marjorie Van Halteren, and others.

Sounds Central

From the Futurists to Hyperdub, musical ideas have constantly evolved. Sounds Central explores this vast area of experiments with audio essays, series, and thematic mixes.

The selection doesn’t strive to be canonical, it rather comes from being a DJ who dislikes clichés and genres, but is fond of moving on the time line.

For more info, please refer to The Archive Speaks in the main menu.

Misophonia and Me

Early in 2021, I learned that I’m suffering from misophonia, a disorder that typically begins in childhood and that’s characterized by extremely painful reactions towards certain sounds. Obviously, persons concerned aim at avoiding trigger sounds.

On the other end of the scale, there are many sounds that keep my ears entertained, e.g. when in natural environments. Some music and sound art falls into this category as well. Out of this pool, I develop Sounds Central’s thematic mixes.

A more detailed text about the implications of misophonia for my curatorial approach towards music over the past 35 years is in the making.

Pay Paul

Coming up with Sounds Central’s thematic mixes takes a lot of effort – and a bit of cash. If you enjoy them, please consider a monthly subscription of 2.99€ (or more) via Mixcloud.

Mixcloud is the first hosting provider to have come up with an infrastructure that allows DJs to legally present music online.

  • 65% of your subscription fee go to artists featured on Sounds Central
  • 18% are for music presenters like myself
  • 12% stay with Mixcloud
  • 5% are for fees

You may, however, support Sounds Central as well with a donation via Paypal. Any amount is welcome and much appreciated!
